LysmachiaMoon's blog: Pine Gap project finished...for now.

I've spent the past 3 days working in the Pine Gap. I've moved all the daylilies out of the Veg and replanted them in a long narrow border all down the "settled" section of the Pine Gap, probably well over 100 feet. Got that whole huge stretch weeded, which meant digging out a lot of tough grass, some blackberries, and some Japanese honeysuckle. Cut a "more or less" clean edge along that whole stretch too. It looks good. I even managed to make a little southward progress into the wilder section...dug over an area about 8 feet wide, 15 feet long that was really heavy with blackberry roots, pokeberry, etc. There's a clump of forsythia growing there and a young native dogwood, but barely visible under the web of weeds. Now that section has been cleared off, I think I'm about halfway down the west side of the Pine Gap. There's still a HUGE stretch to go, a lot of it very wild and weedy, but all along that uncleared stretch I've been popping in shrubs/trees over the years so even though it might not look like it, it is coming along.

I finished up moving the last of the daylilies around 11 a.m Sunday, and my timing was spot on. I no sooner came in than the wind started to pick up and by mid-afternoon it was blowing a gale. No way I'm working down there with all those dead pines shedding branches! So, got the rest of the day off and I have to admit, after 3 days of heavy digging and hauling, I needed it.

I considered going back to the Pine Gap today and trying to make more progress through the wild section, but honestly, I just can't bring my self to face it right now. Instead, I think I'll start clearing out one of the 3 Pond Circle beds. I want to dig out all the dwarf comfrey and Ostrich ferns and move them into that new Woodland Glade area that I mentioned earlier. Once the bed is empty, I need to reset the brick edging, then mulch it for winter. There are hosta, giant allium, snowdrops, bleeding heart, and forget me not (Brunnera sp) in there and those are staying. But the dwarf comfrey and ferns are just a bit too much and need to come out. I have some pink tulips I want to pop in that bed too. After it's done, I'm hoping to get the second of the 3 beds done likewise. The third bed doesn't need any work because I never put comfrey/ferns in it.

Wind has calmed down somewhat and it's a cool sunny day. We got torrential rain late yesterday evening. I'm praying for a few more weeks of workable weather...haven't even started to lift out the cannas, dahlias, and elephant ear for winter storage.
