Finally, and quite suddenly, I have color all around me. I thought it was never going to get here. After we began having rain again in September, a little at a time, things greened up and it looked like spring all over again. But it stayed green, bright green, just like early summer.
The nights have been cooler for weeks now and it was very cool and cloudy over the weekend. This morning I did my walk around and surprise! Color!
My old-too-big Japanese Maple is gorgeous, and would you just look at today's sky!
The huge probably older-than-I-am red maple out front isn't looking too shabby either, not with red brushing its edges. It's one that was smashed in the huge ice storm of '09 and I wouldn't let anybody cut it down. Lookin' good now!
And then for some yellow contrast, there's the river birch. Little by little it's getting there too. It rustles when the wind blows and I keep windchimes in it just for fun. It also had an ice storm injury, but recovered nicely.
There's the coleus, looking like huge blooms here at the tail end of bloom time.
The coleus will be cut back this week, sprigs taken inside and placed in water so it can spend the winter forming new roots and starting all over again in spring. These plants are 5 years old now; they've started over again several times.
Here's the view from my back deck, not a lot of color yet, but getting there.
Happy Fall!
