LysmachiaMoon's blog: Jelly

So the grape jelly did not set. I talked to a Mennonite lady here and she said you can recook it. Gave me specific instructions, recipe, etc. So I decided I would recook half of my batch, two small half-pint jars. Followed everything exactly. It still did not look like it set in the jars, but R said let it cool all the way down. So I moved the two jars from the counter to the kitchen table, next to my little aquarium.

Around 10 pm, we are watching tv and hear a crash in the kitchen.

Well the good news is the jelly set.

The bad news is that it is on the floor mixed with broken glass. Two very guilty looking kittens hiding under the table. *LOL*

Weather is still very nice, but getting warmer. we had yet more rain on Saturday that nobody expected. I feel guilty even saying that, when so many people are struggling with this terrible drought. If I could send the rain that way, I would.

On Friday night I made shakshuka for supper. This is a Middle Eastern Jewish dish, very good and you can alter it to taste. I made mine with tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and onions and garlic. You cook it in a big pan all together till it's nice and soft, then a few minutes before serving, make a few indents in the top and crack raw eggs in. Then put a lid on and let the eggs sort of poach to whatever doneness you like. I usually put a little grated cheese (whatever I've got) on top, but not sure that's "kosher" (no pun intended). Serve with crusty bread. I really like it and it's a good way to use up what's plentiful in the garden. The thing about shakshuka that always makes me smile and have hope for humanity is that this is a traditional Jewish recipe often served on shabbat. But the EXACT same recipe is called "menimen" and is served in Muslim households throughout the Middle East. I think if we'd just let the "cooking mamas" of all the different races, cultures, and religions get together to trade recipes and run the world, it would be a much better place.

I've got to get out there and pick the tomatoes.
