sedumzz's blog: 9/28/2021 - Blog?!? No way!!

It's been a long time since I wrote a blog.
Today my mind has been revolving around ferns too much. I have to empty it here! I cannot stand thinking about ferns all the time!!

First topic: Maidenhair Ferns
I've been really invested in maidenhair ferns again. I used to have quite a few, some in Wabi-Kusa (If you have been reading my plant database comments, you know that I am getting back into wabi-kusa), which, if you didn't know, all got moldy when I moved.

Anyways, I am starting to take care of them again. I really like pressing some of the old fronds, the veins in the leaves press beautifully. I bet they would look magnificent if framed and paired with some dried hellebores (Which would be 3-d if you used silica gel, and you could use a shadow box to frame them).

If you are wondering, I just keep my maidenhair ferns in plates of water and when I had them in Wabi-kusa, they were on an "island". I have very little humidity during winters and they do fine (sometimes a little browning if extreme) but they seem to do fine if I keep them constantly moist in the soil. They also seem to do fine in pretty bright light. I remember seeing some very fine-leaved maidenhairs, I didn't get it, and now I regret it. Ugh! It was so beautiful!!

Second topic (Wow, I am really going all-out on writing this, I am very suprised): Um, Marsilea...
I don't know why, but the simplicity of Marsilea makes me really like it. The plants in the genus are "amphibious", they usually grow in a thin layer of water. The juvenille leaves do not have lobes and look like a big, dark green utricularia, but when the mature..... they look like an adorable four leaf clover!!!!! I also love the name "Nardoos", I don't know if it has a meaning, but it is very fun to say.

Third topic: Selaginella
Well, I am kind of getting off topic but I'll continue because I don't want to stop.
I have been always like selaginella but I can't get them to grow like I used to. Maybe they do better in wabi-kusa or bog-y conditions than in open air. That's probably why. I have some propagating and I'm going to move them to a temporary terrarium. I really like the connected, tree like style. Some of the species' growth habits remind me of a fractal tree.

Fourth topic: Small pennyworts
I don't know why, but the little round leaves, the cute petiole of the tiny varieties of pennyworts is very attractive to me now. I really like some of the mini-lobed ones, such as tripartita and the other one that starts with an "s" and has a variegated cultivar. Verticilla is also nice, it is like a tiny Umbellata, but I don't have space for it right now.

In fact, I don't have much outdoor space or indoor space as of now. Hmmm.

I don't know how to end this blog so here's a photo of a fern I saw at a furniture store.
