LysmachiaMoon's blog: Bipolar February

February is Bipolar Month. One day, it's warm and springlike, the next day it's frigid cold. We had a low of 10F the other night! Today, the high is supposed to be 61F. The NWS is forecasting high winds for later today, into tomorrow, with the possibility of thunderstorms.

Nothing much doing in the garden. The bamboo harvest is on hold; first it was way too cold, then I got bogged down in a big editing project, and on top of all that, I've got a very elderly cat that needs a lot of nursing care just now. Chester came to us as an adult about 8 years ago; the vet estimates his age as "somewhere around 20". He's been pretty shaking with arthritis/age for a couple of years. Last Tuesday (8 Feb) he had to have all his teeth removed. He did not do so well; the first couple of days home I really thought we'd lost him. Then he seemed to rally, then a day later, back down again. I took him back to the vet Monday. He can't see anything wrong in the mouth, but doubled the pain med (gabapentin) and gave me some lidocaine gel to put on Chester's gums. So far, we haven't used the lidocaine. The doubled gabapentin seems to mostly make him very drowsy/disoriented (I know the poor old guy already suffers from some dementia). I think his mouth is healed up pretty well, but he seems to have "forgotten" how to eat...I guess he's having trouble figuring out how to use his new, toothless mouth. Soooo....my day revolves around trying to get food and water into him, keep a constant watch over him when he starts to wander around (he tends to get himself stuck in odd corners), and devise new ways to coax him to eat. We're making progress. He's got the hang of taking globs of cat food off my finger; messy, time-consuming, but effective! I think today I'm cutting back the gabapentin; I want to see if maybe getting him more alert will help.

Rose cutting update: The rose cuttings I put in water back a month ago are not rooting, but they are not ROTTING either. I change the water every other day. It looks like some cuttings may be forming a callus, which is the first step toward rooting. They are almost all, however, leafing out! So I don't know if this is going to work or not. The apple cuttings are also leafing out, but no sign of any rooting/callus formation. I don't think those will work, but we'll see.
