I ventured outside this morning; it's a gorgeous sunny day without wind and with only a few clouds. Should get to near 40, the weather man said. He was wrong.
I was only going to snip a bit of rosemary to add to my soup, which should have taken all of two minutes. It's been cold, with only enough rain to bring us out of the severe drought stage and not enough snow to even consider. But the biggest problem has been the wind storming out of the west. Even though I had carefully cut back most things, all the leaves in Oklahoma and Missouri and the rest of western Kentucky blew into my garden beds, sticking to old stalks and making themselves right at home there.
Maybe because they are so heavily mulched by everybody else's leaves, little green shoots are popping up all over. They surprised me.
Wallflowers blooming | Spiderwort | New growth on roses |
Sedum | Irises | And always mint |
And DAYLILIES! |
There are a couple of bulbs, too, crocus and hyacinth, I think. No matter what they are, they're pretty exciting to see right here in the dead of winter.
I didn't check the daffs; it's cold and the ground is soggy. I'll just save them for another day. I hope all those leaves that belong to somebody else will keep the new growth protected; who knows what the weather will be tomorrow. I pushed a few of the leaves to better cover the baby bulbs. Too soon, too soon, I told them.
I didn't forget the rosemary. It's looking good.
