MaryE's blog: 2022 #104 Bargain vegie plants!

*****Yesterday****
Due to an employee's mistakes whole racks of plants at the local discount store have been put on sale because of frost damage. I bought some of the better looking tomatoes, peppers and squash. Everything has been repotted in newspaper pots. Besides having frost damage they had been seriously overwatered so the soil was almost dripping. My potting soil was damp so I hope the moisture equalizes before major root damage occurs. When they can be safely planted outdoors they will be put into the ground pot and all so the roots aren't disturbed again.

The pots I made were from strips of newspaper rolled around a pop can. Folded bottoms sort of hold them all together. I put them into a plastic container after holding the pot in one hand and filling it with the other. Some are slightly lopsided and leaning against others so everything helps hold everything else together. Squash plants were growing 3 to each 4 inch pot and now have been individually repotted. Tomatoes and peppers needed more space too and of course everything needed to be moved out of the soggy mess. They're not pretty but will do the job.

****Today****
Update on the soggy/frostbitten plants, they looked good this morning and still look good this afternoon, 24 hours after repotting. The paper pots are damp and I think when they feel dry it will be time for a little bit of water.

This morning my hubby needed parts to repair our toilet so I rode with him to the hardware store because it has a small greenhouse and sells locally grown plants. I came home with a 4 pack of lemon cucumbers, 8 cabbage plants and enough snapdragons for the planter box by the greenhouse door. This afternoon I pulled and dug out a lot of weeds in another of my neglected flower beds.

Hubby mowed around our buildings and I hope there is a good supply of clippings for the garden pathways. Our "lawn" still needs to be mowed, that's my job. Volunteer tulips are blooming amidst the weeds so I would like to move them instead of mowing them down. I can carefully avoid most of them. Bees mix up the pollen and those volunteers produce some pretty colors, and also some weird ones such as purple mixed with yellow. Most people don't know that if the flowers are left to dry they produce a lot of seeds neatly stacked in three vertical chambers. Wind scatters them and this is how I get so many surprises.
