LysmachiaMoon's blog: Back to the Pine Gap

Now that I've got most of the other garden areas tidied up and on their way into the winter weather, it's time to turn my attention back to the Pine Gap. I made a good start cleaning up the first sections (the tamest sections!) earlier in the autumn. Today I tackled another 40 or 50 feet, digging out the brambles and some clumps of goldenrod that have gotten out of bounds. I start each work section by digging a rough edge along the outside so that I can stop grass etc from creeping back into the cleared soil. This section today wasn't bad at all. I think I'll try applying some roundup to the couch grass that's blanketing some spots. Since everything else is dormant but the grass is green and growing, it should work. I'm also concerned about that Johnson grass that seems to be creeping ever further southward. I dug out a few small clumps; those will have to go into the trash. Johnson grass produces enormous thick underground roots/rhizomes, very much like running bamboo (both are members of the grass family). It's tough to eradicate, but I keep trying because it's a listed noxious weed in our county. I've often wondered why some plant breeders don't try to cross Johnson grass with something like field corn to produce a perennial corn plant. You'd think that might be possible...

Tomorrow, if all goes according to plan, I'd like to really get stuck into the next big section of the Pine Gap, where the weeds and brambles are much thicker. I did not get as much done today as I hoped because it was one of "those days" when you think "I'll just get this done..." and it goes from there....I woke up intending to just swap out the slipcovers and drapes, then get outside and digging. Then I had the "mightaswellas" ... might as well launder the slipcovers and drapes I took down. Then realized the clothesline pole, after 35 years, had fallen over and had to tie the line to a big tree (temporary) instead. Then realized I had a huge heap of dirty workies to launder first. Then after taking off the slipcovers, saw what a dusty mess the floor was, so got out the vac. Front of vac is cracked. Got out the duct tape. And etc. etc etc.... Hilarious!

Tomorrow, as god is my witness *raises fist in best Scarlett O'Hara manner* I will get out there and dig brambles!
