grdnguru's blog: Its been a long, long time.....

Yes, it has been a very long time since I last posted here. Life has been busy and yes - challenging. Much has been going on and much has to be done even at this early stage of January. Last year, I fell behind early and never really was able to catch up. The weather and my annual nemesises (squirrels anyone?) wreaked a little more than tolerable damages last year. Those issues have to be addressed and controlled. That won't be easy but try I must!
As of this date, I'm at the point where I need to begin my seedings for Cabbage, Broccoli and maybe Cauliflower. I will also begin seedings for Spinach, lettuce and green beans. So, as you can see, it is going to very busy here in the next couple of days. I am starting the latter three plants as I have a greenhouse to which I will be able to move these when they mature.
On a long run basis, I've decided to attempt to grow my garden completely in grow bags and pots. I'm doing this as an experiment that will allow me to let all of my beds rest (lay fallow) this year. It will be both a challenging and exciting.
Last fall, I was able to collect enough mulched leaves from a neighbor to cover my beds to a height about 3 inches. I added a light cover of compost and spent soil to hold the leaves in winds. I will let them continue to rot over the summer while watering them in dry periods to assure they rot. In early fall, I will then turn the leaves into the ground. Once turned, I will then seed in cover crops to both hold the nutrients in place and provide for a green fertilizer in the spring of 2024. Lots of work for sure. But the payoff is having a totally revived soil for next summer.
So, there is much to do and it's time to get the garden rolling.
Please join me and as always, I love getting questions and/or insights from others. Until next time - Happy Gardening Everyone.
