LysmachiaMoon's blog: My cats are trying to kill me

Lordy, what a week. On Tuesday (happy Valentine's Day!) I had to get our newest female cat, Harriet (she's only just 1 year old), to the vet for her boosters (she had her first rabies, distemper, and fe-leuk shots on the 7th). She is not very well socialized (which is putting it mildly) and can be very quick with the murder mittens if you reach down to pet her. Showing what I consider to be considerable foolishness as well as fortitude, I made the mistake of grabbing her by the scruff to put her in the cat carrier and she twisted around and bit me, hard, on the right wrist.

I delivered her to the vet, all went well there (they made a terrible fuss over the poor baby because they saw a smear of blood on her back...they were worried the darling had a boo-boo until I pointed out it was MY blood. "Oh, well then." *shrug*)

After I brought Harriet home, I hied myself to Urgent Care where the doctor gave me a good talking to about the dangers of cat, dog, and human bites. She made me fill out a scary form that goes to the Animal Control officer, but assured me it was a formality, for statistical purposes only. "You know the cat, the cat has its shots, you were stupid to grab her." was pretty much how she put the whole episode (just when I was starting to feel a little heroic). She gave me a 10-day course of antibiotics (huge pills; I suspect they are used to medicate horses) and warned me of dire consequences. Which, of course, has meant that the past two days have been a hell of anxiety and worry....is the red spot getting bigger? Is the swelling increasing? I took my temperature so many times the battery went dead.

Then, yesterday evening, don't you know, my best buddy cat Ghost got me. Ghost doesn't see at all well, and in the dimly lit hallway he mistook my bare foot as I came out of the bathroom after my shower for his arch-enemy Louie. So now I have a bad scratch on my foot and another (albeit very glancing and shallow) bite on my ankle. Oh well, at least I have antibiotics on board.

Harriet must have sensed she is persona non grata with me because she took off Wednesday morning and hasnt been seen since. At this point, I'm not real sure how I feel about her. As for Ghost, I refused to speak to him all evening and he felt suitably guilty. We made up this morning. I can't stay mad at that big fluffy scoundrel.

More germination. My broccoli, cauliflower, both early and late cabbages are up and growing. My sweet potato starts are really doing well now. They started out good, then got a bad infestation of aphids that set them back. Now that the aphids are gone, they are putting on a lot of new growth again. My peppers (hot and sweet both) are showing true leaves. I finally got at least some of my tomato seeds into compost trays: a dozen pots each of Roma and 10 Fingers of Napoli, six each of Big Beef and a heirloom variety called Zapotec (Got the seeds free as a bonus). I'd like to get a few more "minor" varieties started this week.

Rain overnight and again this morning. The temperature was into high 60s yesterday, but a front went thru around 10 a.m. today like a freight train and the temperature is falling rapidly. It's only 45 at 1 p.m.

So far, so good, the swelling and redness are fading, doesnt hurt, I think I'm on the mend.
