slowcala's blog: New Garden Friends

Isn't it amazing how one day in your life can bring about such a new hope, new purpose for the future? That happened to me just 2 days ago. On my morning walk I met another lady walker who I've met several times on my treks. Slowly we have become more acquainted and I finally got her to come over and do a 10 cent tour of my garden to see my Wattle Fence. She liked it and told a neighbor of hers who is an avid gardener about it and the lady said that she's been thinking about making one for her garden. She told me where the friend lived and said I should go see her. She had shown me pictures of the lady's garden and they were beautiful and off I went to see and meet this new gardener and delight in her garden.

Well, I didn't find her the 1st day, but I found her a few days later. Wow! I was blown away by her extensive amount of plant specimens and creativity. She has really big trees in her front and back yard and has made many raised beds. I am also sure that she has spent a fortune on potting soil, soil amendments, containers, and everything associated with having a raised bed garden. Her whole yard is a continuous garden. She has plants everywhere, and she has select varieties that she has propagated and spread. Such a beautiful garden I have not seen in a few years. I love her style. It's very eclectic, but it makes sense. She has vegetables in with pots of Blueberries, she has companion planting throughout, she has a huge round pot of Spearmint to contain it and Kale stuck in places all around the yard. She says she eats Kale 3 times a day. I saw fennel over my head and even though I've grown fennel I don't remember it being that lovely. Maybe I moved it before it got big enough. She even has an Elderberry bush in the backyard. Do you know that I forgot all about my camera and did not take one picture? Dufus head! Don't worry, I will go back and take pictures the next trip. She invited us back! Life is good!

With the mature trees on her property she gets dappled sunlight all day, so she doesn't have to worry about the extreme heat that I'm fighting. Oh, I just loved meeting her and seeing her garden. DH was with me and he loved it too. I asked if she wanted to follow us home to see my Wattle Fence and she did. She loves the Wattle Fences and wants one in her garden. I told her what I used and offered to help when she does hers. She potted up 4 Hamelia Patens for me and I came home with a pocket full of Red Salvia and Orange Cosmo seeds. I shared the plants and seeds with Ray and another neighbor.

I forgot to tell you that we got glorious rain. This was 3 nights ago and it was a Gully Washer. All the storm drains were overflowing and the streets were full of debris. It was really something. Our rain barrel is full and the overflow barrel has 64 gallons of water in it. Yea!

I met another lady on my morning walks and she has a soil erosion problem in the back of her house. The hill above her has washed down into her yard. I left her a note yesterday and told her I had all kinds of plants to put on that bank to stop the soil washouts. She is coming on Monday and I will give her plenty to get started with. I will show her what I did to my Bank to prevent erosion. We have 3 neighbors around us that are having severe soil erosion and on one the Crepe Myrtle roots are fully exposed, and the sand has washed downhill to mine and the guy next doors yards.

On a brighter note, I was carrying water from the tub that our neighbors have at the end of their gutter for us to catch rainwater and I looked over and saw what looked like German Camomile. I gave it a sniff and sure enough it's Camomile. I told her about it. How wonderful to have in your garden.

Peace & Plenty.
