slowcala's blog: More Plants For My Garden

Posted on Jun 4, 2023 3:09 AM

First of all, let me just say that our weather has been just like mid-summer here and we need a good drenching slow rain. Yes, I know the weather is the most talked about thing.

Yesterday I had visits from my 2 newest friends. One brought me Cosmo seeds, (I love them), and the other brought plants, live & potted on, and a jar of Hamelia Patens cuttings to root. She has a special thing to add to the water that makes them root faster. I'm keeping that for other things to root. Rose cuttings! Thinking .

Barbara is like a horticulture genius. I'm too old to remember all the knowledge that she speaks to me while I'm visiting her garden, but some of it has sunk in and I feel so blessed that she is a generous person. She has shared her big cherry tomatoes with us twice. Man, they are so good, and I just pop them in my mouth for snacks. I am that woman who stands in the middle of the tomato patch and eats the fruit of the vine with the sun blessing her face and thanking God that there is such a super food in this world.

Here is what she gave me yesterday: A big Red Salvia and a bunch of tiny ones, a big Tithonia, almost 4 feet or so and a bunch of smaller ones, 4 or 5 Rosemary, 'Arp', 10-12 cuttings of Hamelia Patens in the jar of special gel mix rooting hormone stuff, Lilliput Zinnias potted on, and a bag of Zinnia chaff where she has processed her seeds and does not want one seed to go to waste. I told you her garden is just so full of plants, and she maintains it all by herself. I am going to do a video of her garden the next time I go. I may be able to have that side yard garden before fall, but I cannot dig up the whole space until the rains come. It's too hot and dry right now.

I sowed Tithonia seeds in a pot and they are germinated. I sowed Milkweed in another pot and I think they have germinated also, but not 100% sure yet.

DH has been carrying the buckets of rainwater around the garden for me and he is a great help. I have had a backache almost every day due to bending over so much.

Our real estate agents DH dropped by yesterday and I offered to make them a garden at the property they just purchased. It will be winter before I undertake this project, but they have a big space in the back yard that has been a garden once upon a time. It is covered with gravel right now, which is important for soil erosion control because the bank behind their house & all the neighbors' houses goes steeply down to a retention pond. We will provide all the plants to start the garden and they can purchase whatever they want to add to it along the way. We will gift them one of those 'Arp' Rosemary's for Christmas. They should be big enough by that time.

I planted so many cosmos seeds yesterday and I can't wait to see them bloom. They are yellow & orange and I just love the way they grow tall and wave in the breeze.
Peace & Plenty.
