It was a cool morning for a walk, and I took the long way around today. So glad I did! Lately I have been focused on getting Hamelia Patens or Firebush started in my garden. I have a new garden friend, Barb, that has it in her garden, and for the past year I've been noticing it in a lot of people's yards, even in winter, and I was loving the red and green color and that it was a big bush.
Well, Barb came over on Saturday and brought me all those plants and the cuttings of the Hamelia Patens, long cuttings. I put the rooting hormone on them and placed them into pots and I thought that was it. Now I will have this beautiful Florida native plant/bush in my garden, and it will feed the hummers, bees, & butterflies. Right!
I messed up and by the afternoon yesterday they were drooping all the way down onto the craft table where I had them. This morning I watched a video about rooting cuttings and I redid the whole bunch. I have 25 plants rooting in deeper pots and I trimmed some of the longest ones off and made 2 plants. This is not why I'm writing this blog today though.
On my walk around the Aquatic Center I have seen a storm drain many times and thought it had a Cherry Laurel growing out of it. It had a red cast to the tips of the branches sticking out the top so I assumed it was a CL. Never assume anything! Today it has the beautiful tubular blooms, with that magnificent red/orange color and I could not believe my eyes. I walked closer to get a better look and lo & behold there it was. Firebush, growing out of that storm drain. I said out loud to myself, "I can't believe it." I started to continue my walk, but stopped and went back and took these pictures.
Peace & Plenty
ps If they cleaned out the storm drain, I wonder how big this bush really is? It's been growing in there for a long time, over a year and then some.
