LysmachiaMoon's blog: Holy Smoke!

Posted on Jun 7, 2023 8:08 AM

We're under an air quality alert all day and into the night because our region is being affected by smoke from wildfires up in Canada, over 700 miles north of us. This has been the strangest atmospheric/weather month I've ever seen in my life. We had an exceptionally cold and dry May, which segued into a cold and dry June. Nothing but high blue skies and northerly breezes for weeks now, and lately this strange haze from the far-off fires. Today, the sky is white with haze/overcast. Still no rain in the forecast, just slight "chance of showers" over the weekend. I'm hoping for some sort of big southern/tropical system to churn its way up the coast and get things moving.

Except for watering things and harvesting cherries, strawberries, and rhubarb, gardening is at a standstill. I have a tub full of young plants from the Master Gardener's sale a month ago still waiting to be planted. They are probably going to stay in that tub until fall unless the weather changes dramatically wetter. I can keep things healthy and growing in a tub that contains moisture much better than I can keep after them scattered into planting spots all over the garden. In fact, I'm driving down to Hagerstown today to pick up a few things and check out any discount plants at Lowe's there.
