LysmachiaMoon's blog: Scoops!

Very hot and humid here yesterday, today, tomorrow, then we're supposed to see cooler more seasonable weather next week. We've got a good chance for rain tomorrow night and I hope that pans out because it's getting dry out there.

Got the chain link dog pen yesterday morning. It's a bit lighter construction than the greenhouse one, but perfect for a berry cage. We were able to dismantle it and remove the chain link, which simply wraps around the frame. My greenhouse has chain link panels instead. It's all sitting in the side yard waiting for late October when I'll redo the berry bed layout. So very glad to have gotten it and the woman who sold it was so relieved to have it out of her yard.

I'M GETTING THE BANTY hens and the little hen house! Free! I just got off the phone with the young lady who is re-homing them and she said I can come up on Sunday morning. I put netting over the big hen run and cleaned out the rabbit hutch/chick house and they can safely live there until I get their house set up in the veg. I can't believe I got both things (dog pen, banties and house). Well, Crossing Fingers! hopefully all will go well with the hens.

The big news this week is that my friend Bobbie's husband found a nearly dead kitten on the road Tuesday night. They called me (I'm kind of the Dr. Quinn Kitten Medicine woman around here) at 8 p.m. and I was up at their place till well after 10 working on the poor thing. She's going to be ok. But oh what a terrible thing. At first we thot she had been hit by a car, but then realized she had crawled to the road to die. She's about 7 weeks old, mostly white, with calico (orange and black) spots. She is most likely going to be blind or at best have only partial vision in one eye. The other eye...what a nightmare. It must have been so badly infected the body rejected it. There's just this horrid ball like scab stuck to where her eye socket is. She was covered in fly eggs, badly dehydrated, skin and bones, but when I got a syringe of water into her mouth she gulped it down and that's a good sign there's still some fight in the animal. We got the stuff cleaned off her face so she could breath, bathed her as much as we could to get rid of the fly eggs and gross stuff. I just kept giving her syringe after syringe of water, the liquid drained from canned cat food, and then diluted baby food. I gave her a dose of antibiotics and we did what we could to clean up her "good" eye. By the time I left, she already looked a bit better, more responsive, purring and kneading her blanket, eager for the food. Next morning, she looked so much better, plumped up with hydration, walking a bit. We took her to the vet in the afternoon, he said keep do what we're doing for two weeks then he will see what to do with that bad eye. Right now he said just leave it alone, bad as it looks, the worst is over and now it's just a matter of getting rid of infection, letting things heal, and building up her strength. Kittens are amazing, they fight to stay alive. By yesterday morning (day 2) she was up and running around in Bobbie's bathroom, with supervision of course. Her good eye looks a little better, it's slightly open, you can see a little blue color of the iris. We're hoping we can preserve at least some vision there. Vet gave her eye drops for 3 times a day. He also put on a spot treatment to get rid of ear mites and intestinal pests. This is how bad that kitten was: She has no fleas. The vet said she was so near death her body temp must have dropped and fleas will abandon a dying animal. Isn't that horrible? But she fell into the right hands, god bless Terry for having the compassion to stop and pick her up. Lovey dubby We're all of us in love with her, but nobody has decided on a name yet. Wish her luck!
