ScarletTricycle's blog: No. 126: Strong and sturdy, might need a whisperer

Hello all!

Thumb of 2023-07-28/ScarletTricycle/6bd62c

Here this one is a few days in and it is the straightest most non wobbly plant and yet the center is saying here I am. Grrr. I can only hope its next bloom stays closed because I do kind of like it's crazy. Hence the need for a dahlia center whisperer.

I'm keeping all my seedlings covered until I see the blooms open and maybe take off so the crazy petal nibblers stay away and I can see what I have. I am also trying to keep anything with an open center; before pollen showing up, removed as a just in case. It requires a bunch of observation but that's what I'm doing.

I think I'll be making a seed cutoff save date maybe around august 20 - by then I hope I have lots of blooms with some to just let go to seed. But that means this rain needs to not be heavy come august and right now it's like we are playing catch up but good. Rains fine, just not when I'm trying to make seeds! nodding

I've got about 20 more bud heads between the 22 and 23 seedlings thinking about doing their stuff in the next few weeks. Hoping for lots more to share in time!

And in case, I'm just having fun and find it exciting waiting to see what comes from the seeds. I know some may view this as she doesn't know what she's doing and why is she posting as she doesn't have a true breeding program. No I don't. I don't have the patience to run around with a paintbrush and envelope, more power to those that can. I let the bees do the job they enjoy. Sidenote:
I just read on bees it takes visits to 2 million flowers to make a small amount of honey. Anyway - what I am saying is I find this to be fun in collecting, finding I have viable seed and then what do these become in the long run. Kind of like watching what my kids are growing into as they get closer to adulthood. I enjoy watching and seeing what has been created. I also love color and shapes, so this is right up my path of learning.

That said, I encourage y'all to try saving seeds of anything that piques your interest. I think the only way we learn is to share and encourage each other to try and see where it takes you. Mine may not be pretty or unique or a top quality but I do love the anticipation of a plant with a bud head waiting to open.

Happy day all!
