Well, no sooner complained about the dry than it rained. We got a soaking downpour Friday evening, about a half inch. Everything looks much better, refreshed. I'm continuing with the Big Tidy, got the first section of the Veg Flower Border cleaned up this morning and did the short section of the Driveway Bed late Thursday. I'm repainting my office, so I'm dividing my time between that, garden, and etc. It's the "etc." that seems to take up most of the day.
The veg is booming along; it's so rampant I'm a little bit afraid to go in there! I've got to do some serious harvesting soon. This year, I've decided to more or less let it "do its thing." I figure I got everything off to a pretty good start, and I'm not going to worry about keeping everything tidy. I cut down/pull whatever weeds come to hand as I'm harvesting, and I'm battling those dratted harlequin bugs and cutting down the field bindweed which wants to cover everything. Beyond that, I'm not worried. Let the tomatoes sprawl over the paths, let the pole beans trail over to the entrance archway, let the squash vines wend their way through everything. As long as I'm getting veg, I don't care.
Walking through the veg can be a bit tricky though. Trying to step between the tomato vines, over the squash vines, under the bean vines. And let's not forget Greta the Garter Snake who lives in there. I don't (really, really don't) want to step on her either. At one point, as I slowly stepped, paused, pivoted, stepped it occurred to me that I could probly come up with a Gardener's Tai Chi routine. Or Gardener's yoga. The "Bean Picking over Cucumber Vine" pose. (balance on the right foot with left foot raised to almost touch tushie, extend right arm while cradling bean pot in left arm). The "Greet the Potato Hill" pose (as you fall forward, place both hands firmly on the ground, tushie high in the air, shuffle feet slowly sideways while breathing heavily thru the mouth). The possibilities are endless.
