slowcala's blog: Another Garden Job

I don't know if I ever mentioned my friend & neighbor who is a Snowbird and bought a house on our Cul de sac years ago, but she called me yesterday morning out of the blue. Yes, I was sort of shocked because she never calls me!

DH & I were on our way home from a nightmare trip that had us driving miles out of our way & getting lost, and then waiting for a wreck on the highway to clear that took almost an hour. It's a long story! Anyway, what my friend wanted was for me to take a look at her backyard. The lady who lives right beside her had reported that there was some very overgrown foliage/weeds that needed attention. Yes, I told her I would look into the situation. After lunch I walked down and I could not believe how overgrown the bushes and trees were, and the fact is that they were taking over the path around the corner of her house. We have had a lot of rain and wicked sun these past few months.

I took 17 photos of front and back yards and emailed them to her. She was shocked too! She commissioned me to get rid of the low-lying stuff and she would take care of the pointy stuff because she has 3 trimming tools. I forgot to mention that the Pampas Grass was the biggest thing encroaching on the path, but that it has not bloomed yet and more importantly that she has a very, very steep hillside behind her house with a dramatic drop-off.

The drop-off begins just a few feet to the left of the Pampas Grass. I told her that I would leave that grass alone and let it bloom, but remove the Rag weed and trim the Podocarpus right at the corner of the house.

It shouldn't take me too long to knock the weeds out and at $20 per hour she can rest easy on the payment. So, after my morning walk, I'll get crackin' on it. Something to do.

Oh, BTW, I'm entering the Scarecrow contest that they have here where we live. I almost entered last year but didn't. You have to fill out an entry form, then have your scarecrow displayed by Oct. 12th, then people come by and vote for the ones they like. There is 1st, 2nd, & 3rd prize winners of $100, $50, & $25 Visa cards. My friend Ray is entering also. I told her if we both win, we can all go out and eat together. Fun!
