Yesterday our friend told DH about this raised bed that a guy was giving away. DH jumped on that fast and called the guy. We went by there today and I really liked it so we said we'd love to have it. He was so kind and helpful and was glad that someone could use it.
It is 4 ft by 2 ft with a height of about 2 1/2 to 3 ft. It has a shelf underneath to set your pots & lay your tools on. He even gave me the roll of leftover landscaping cloth to put a new layer in the box. The old one was rather worn. It was full of soil, so we had to dip it all out and put it into 5-gallon buckets. There were 8 buckets of soil total. The guy said he made the raised bed box to grow herbs in and his health was declining this year, so he was not going to need it anymore. I told him that I was a volunteer gardener for my neighborhood, and I would be glad to come over and help him anytime. He loved that and said he would take me up on that offer. He and his wife have a beautiful home where the lawn and landscaping are managed, but he has put in for upgraded landscaping.
I put it on our patio and that will be a perfect place for growing herbs, starting seeds, etc. I really like it and I'm really glad to have it. Our friend Ray & her DH helped us get it into their truck and get it home. They are such good people.
So now I have a dirt box to grow things in, the rabbits can't reach the tiny seedlings, and I don't have to stoop, or try to get plants started in odd areas of the garden.
It's dark right now, but tomorrow I will take some pictures and add them to this blog. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would own a raised dirt box. It's pretty neat.
