MaryE's blog: 2023 #177 Snow already!!

The good news is that the furnace in the greenhouse continues to work! Closer inspection showed no serious damage except for the tomato plants which I am going to toss. They look worse every day. The jades (at least my original one) survived a deeper freeze and came back from the roots. One of the others came from a broken piece of that one a few years later, and the third one grew from random pieces of jades picked up off the ground in San Diego in 2010. That one has never bloomed, maybe just needs to be older or something. It's a slightly different one, has orange coloring on the leaf edges. I need to repot all of them but have a feeling that being rootbound might encourage blooming. I really don't know. One of thm has cracked it's ceramic pot. It wants OUT! Maybe blooming is just age related, has to do with light or ?? Jades also drop pieces of stem and leaves to replant themselves.

We unloaded the bags of leaves from the back of the pickup to the back of the Kawasaki mule side by side. I took them down the hill bout half a dozen at a time to the bare good for nothing area just above the garden and lined them up along the fence. I need to open the tops and add some water, and/or let the snow filter down into them. There are somewhere around 50-55 bags, some of them very heavy. I didn't really believe the forecast that called for snow showers for the next several days but we got it. Last night the snow arrived and all day we have had very light snow falling. It's only totaled about an inch but might be joined ab another foot or more and not leave until spring. 'Tis the season!

Tomorrow starts about a month of Santa Claus duties for my hubby. He was asked 12 years ago to substitute for a man who had a Santa suit but didn't want to do it any more. He borrowed the suit and found that he really liked being Santa Claus. The next year he was asked to do it again so he borrowed the suit again. The boots didn't really fit him so he decided it was time to buy his own suit. Tomorrow there will be the annual fund raiser for a local civic club. That lasts 5 hours. Then there is a break before he rides in or on some type of conveyance (horse drawn carriage, fire truck, vintage car or whatever somebody has this year) and will lead the countdown to light the city tree at the end of it. And then there will be about half an hour of mingling with the crowd, holding babies, posing for pictures with families, etc. After tomorrow the rest of the season is easy! Oh yes, I do know this is not garden related. It's life related!
