LysmachiaMoon's blog: It's important to clean up the corners

Posted on Dec 17, 2023 11:50 AM

It seems like I manage the main parts of the garden pretty well, but the corners are always a mess. I got the northwest corner of the veg cleaned up a couple weeks ago. Still picking away at the southwest veg corner. Today I got some of the southeast corner of the veg cleaned up. It's too muddy to do much (which is why the SW corner is on hold...), but I did remove a lot of those mock strawberries and dig out the few burdock that were coming up there. I also got a piece of plastic sheeting put up on the south end of the greenhouse, where the roof plastic is starting to fail. It's not pretty, but it will keep out the rain until spring, when I think I'll do the whole roof over again.

Another big chunk of dead branches came out of the dead pine by the road, so every time I hauled a barrow load of weeds to the Woodland compost heap, I dragged out more branches. Got everything pulled out; took a big load up to the Brush Fence and hauled the heaviest pieces clear of the trees so I can get to them with the chainsaw next week. We're forecast to get a significant amount of rain over the next 24-36 hours (up to 3 inches, but I'll wait until I see that), so I'm holding off doing anything much today, concentrating on just cleaning up here and there and making sure the place looks neat for the holidays.

A friend of a friend of a friend who is retired now but who has strong roots in dog rescue and helping with homeless shelters asked us to take 10 big garbage bags of bed linens and find some use for them. Apparently, her "donation network" just keeps dropping off things at her house and it's accumulating to the point where she's afraid some of this stuff will start to deteriorate. My friend B and I went thru those bags yesterday, at B's house... it took 2 hours. On the one hand, I have to admire people who are willing to give so generously. But on the other, I have to admit to being a little appalled at what some people get rid of. All of it was gently used, a lot of it showed signs of normal wear and tear, but so much of it was nearly new that we wondered why anyone would pass it on. Expensive comforters, blankets, sheets, etc. We kept some for ourselves and family members and we're going to donate most of it to some low-income retirement homes in the area. our local homeless shelter has already taken so much they don't want anymore, and the animal shelters also refused anything more. It seems like there should be some easy and inexpensive way to get goods like these to the people (worldwide) who need it most.
