I finally got the nerve to bring out the Ego Chainsaw this morning. It's been a while. "Hello, Ego. Remember me?"
The first project was to cut up the two big branches that fell out of the dead pine by the road. That went well. It took four trips to haul the cut up wood to the brush fence at the top of the hill.
Then I decided to take down the very nearly dead purple leafed flowering plum up at the top of the Storybook Garden. That poor tree. Absolutely infested with black knot fungus. I've been trying to keep it alive, pruning out the bad spots but it got to the point where there was very little living wood left.

The main trunk is about 4 and half feet tall, then three big stems. Not a huge tree but big enough. It took over an hour to get it all the way down and all the wood put onto the Brush Fence. At least that wasn't too much work...the Brush Fence is only a short way from the top of the Storybook Garden. It looks very different up there now! Not sure if I'll replace the tree with another (of a different non-black knot susceptible species) or just leave it open. The area is already partly shaded by a maple and a young white pine.

Ready for Santa Claus. I've got all the presents bought, wrapped, and mailed out/under the tree. Cookies were not a success this year. The only ones that came out really well were the choco-chip and they aren't my favorites. I think I'll wait for New Year's Day and bake a loaf of apple cake or something.
