MaryE's blog: 2024 #1 Winter?

Happy New Year everybody!

We've just had the warmest December since sometime in the early 1940s. Yes, it's been freezing at times and we have had a little snow but also several days and nights without even a hint of frost. We are seeing green where early frosts had knocked the grass into dormancy, and have had some rain but very little snow. December was more like March without as much wind. The weather has been having an identity crisis! Storms that caused major flooding in western Oregon gave us no problem here on the eastern side.

So far I've not received any seed catalogs. Usually I have a couple before the Christmas cards have all arrived. I think more companies are going all digital. It's all about their bottom line but I like to have multiple paper copies spread out on a table so I can easily compare varieties. Some people find the electronic methods easier. Not me. It's the same with books. There is just something comforting about sitting in a comfy chair with a real book!

I didn't toss all of the greenhouse tomato plants. Most showed some new growth after a few days so I trimmed, repotted and watered. Will they become anything? Wait and see. The jade plants are ugly but have some green so I haven't done anything to them. I might be surprised. Most of the geranium cuttings from a year ago have been repotted into larger pots. A lot of the old plants didn't survive that 20 degree night outside last fall, so these will be replacements. It does look like I will be buying a lot more of the typical bedding plants this spring to fill in the gaps. It only takes one cold night to change a lot of my planting plans.

Our Christmas cactus is loaded with blooms and still has a lot of buds forming. Some years it still has flowers in early May! It is 42 inches across and has a whole table to itself. How old is it? I have no idea.
