slowcala's blog: New Years Day Food

Posted on Jan 3, 2024 6:56 AM

In all my 70+ years of living I had never heard of the eating of sauerkraut and pork for the NY's meal. Apparently, it is a custom made by Ohio and Pennsylvania folks. My DH told me after we married that we would not have any kind of fowl for the NY's meal. He informed me that if you ate it you would have a foul year. Being from the south and being poor to boot I don't think we followed any kind of superstition pertaining to the diet on NY's Day.

If I remember correctly, I've either fixed a pot roast, or ham since we married. This year it was ham, pinto beans, sweet potatoes, cornbread with butter & Amish Apple Butter & for dessert we had Big Boy ice-cream sandwiches. It was lip smackin' delicious and I invited the widow and Dottie. They both thoroughly enjoyed it, and the pinto beans and cornbread was made exclusively for the widow because she told me not too long ago that she would love to have some, and that she was raised on it being from Tennessee and I was certainly raised on it, plus fried potatoes. That was our staple diet. I must say my pinto beans were delicious because I threw in the ham bone left over from Christmas dinner.

So, we live and learn. You are never too old to learn something. I think this year is starting out great and I'm glad DH bought 2 packs of fresh Cranberries because yesterday I made more Cranberry Sauce and I've been putting it on things like Oatmeal w/cranberries and cream cheese for bkfst, and crackers, cream cheese, & cranberry sauce for a snack yesterday afternoon, and I smeared some on my Turkey Sandwich yesterday right after I made it. Now, how you gonna' beat that?

Peace & Plenty.
PS I can't wait to get started sowing seeds and getting some plants to put in the garden. Lovey dubby
