slowcala's blog: Fig Sticks

Posted on Mar 1, 2024 2:35 AM

We went to visit Barb yesterday and took her the Dill plants that she asked for. She was hard at work making a divider wall out of big pavers between her property and the next-door neighbor who reported her, and she got a very steep fine from the HOA. She took time out to walk us around her garden and show us what she had been doing garden wise. She had pulled out a bunch of the potted Zinnia seedlings and placed them in the sun and they looked extremely happy and bigger. That Lanai/Greenhouse is still full of plants though and there is barely room to scoot through the rows.

She gave me a lot more Zinnias plus she had a whole bunch of Fig sticks in a bucket of rooting hormone solution. I had asked her for starts from the Fig tree and she told me to take all of them. There were 6 or 7 and I gave 2 away. I will leave those in the water to root. They already have buds coming on.

The last time we visited she gave me a plethora of Cape Honeysuckle seeds. I don't know if they will grow or if the seed is sterile. If anyone has knowledge of this or has grown a shrub from seed, please let me know. If they do grow, I should have enough to give the whole neighborhood a Cape Honeysuckle bush. I also want to espalier some of it along one outside wall of our house.

This is the 2nd year I've tried to grow Blanket Flower from seed and no cigar. I believe it's sterile.

My friend Val gave me a bucket of gemstones, (not real), sea glass, rocks, & lava rocks. It took me about 2 hours to separate all of it into separate containers, but I did it. I plan on making things with those sea glass and gemstones and the rocks have already gone into the garden. The gemstones are all different colors, and I may glue those to a tabletop. The sea glass may go into a lamp base in the future. Not sure what I'll do yet.

I planted the Zinnias that Barb gave me yesterday inside the Leaf Corral/Rabbit-Proof cage. I sure hope it's rabbit-proof! They could actually dig under it if they really wanted to, but I hope not.

I worked in the garden a total of 5 hours straight yesterday. Yes, I was exhausted last night, but it felt good to get out there before it gets too hot. I am also getting my muscles ready for the mowing that is ahead. Peace & Plenty.
