Aloe Vera Information
Posted by Matthew Sessoms from NC on 2003-02-01 13:23:52

Hey
I have just bought an Aloe Vera plant. I believe this one is a miniture. It is in a 2.5" size pot. The plant itself is probably 3" tall. This aloe plant has roughly 4 offsets(babies, shoots--small other aloe plants). Should/can I transplant the small babies to another pot. How should I do this? What size of pot, how much water, etc. I cannot see any of the soil. That is how bunchy they are! The main plant (the one in the middle), should I leave it there in the same size of pot or should I put it in a larger one? How much water should I give this plant? No directions came with it.
The tag said it was an "Aloe & Haworthia." Have you ever heard of this?
Thanks for the help(in a head of time)!!

Matthew - I think that you have two different plant species in the pot. The larger one is an Aloe vera. The smaller ones are probably Haworthia, not baby Aloe veras.

It is perfectly OK for them to be crowded in the pot. A small pot will help prevent inadvertant overwatering. Both plants like dry soil and lots of bright light. Dunk the pot in a sink of water every week or two and then return it to a sunny windowsill. That's the only care this "thrive-on-neglect" plant requires.

Matthew...I'm sure that Will is absolutely correct is stating that you have a Haworthia, (some Haworthias do strongly resemble aloes) but I don't believe you *also* have an aloe in the same pot. I've noticed this often, especially in plants for sale at Wal-Mart....the care tag is quite general, stating that the care is the same for Aloes and Haworthias, which are two *entirely* seperate plants. Wal Mart will often tag many cacti and succulents this way, (The tag will state, simply 'Cacti and Succulents') and I've even seen ferns and palms tagged this way. Check out this search for images on Google for Haworthia....I'm betting you have a pot full of them. Some of them offset very freely when young/small.
