II. A Plant’s Basic Needs

Like humans, plants have certain basic needs that must be satisfied if they are to survive and flourish. And, like us, some plants can survive on almost nothing, while others seem to require constant coddling and attention or they wither. Consider the cactus in the desert, baking in the sun, living in seemingly sterile sand, asking only for a shower of rain once or twice a year—yet cacti manage to grow and survive for decades. On the other hand, think of our prized hybrid roses, which seem susceptible to every "cold" that comes around—insects, diseases, viruses—or else it’s too hot, or too wet, or something else is wrong. Differences aside, there are some basic needs shared among plants.
