I. The Plant Cell

It isn’t absolutely necessary to understand cell biology to be a skilled gardener, but a grasp of the basic concepts will help you appreciate the miracles taking place within your plants. And by studying processes like photosynthesis and transpiration, you’ll be better able to "read" your plants and more fully understand their needs and cycles.

This week we’ll begin by taking a close-up view of plants. We’ll examine plant cell structures, then move on to explore the important processes taking place on this microscopic level. We’ll also discuss how plant growth responses familiar to most gardeners—such as seedlings bending toward light—are explained on the cellular level.
