Diversity through Evolution

Last week we surveyed the remarkable diversity within the plant world, and looked at the ways plants are named and classified. This week we’ll build on last week’s work by exploring how and why these diverse forms arose. We’ll revisit the topic of plant basic needs, and look at the evolutionary process that gave rise to adaptations that allow plants to fill their needs in challenging environments. We’ll move on to adaptations for protection, and, finally, discuss adaptations to climate. Although the distinctions are often blurry—for example, climate influences a plant’s ability to fill its basic needs—this organization will give us a frame of reference and a place to start.
