You can start the seeded mats indoors but they might be difficult to transplant into the garden unless you cut them into manageable sized pieces prior to starting them. Try cutting them into six by six inch blocks and laying each on a deep tray of potting soil. When it's time to set them in the garden, each piece will be easy to handle and you can plant them side by side in the garden bed. I think it's worth a try!
