i live in zone 5. since my planting begins later than some areas, do catalog companies fill orders as received or by planting dates? I have received both small plants and notices that the item is out of stock even when purchased in February.

The answer really depends upong the company you're dealing with. Typically, catalogs are not received in the mail until January and by the time you place your order, it's possible for them to be sold out. However, if you order online, you're generally at the top of the list for filling orders. So, check with online companies in December and try to place your order as soon as they begin accepting orders for the next growing season. Most reputable companies time their shipments so you'll receive your plants when it's time to plant in your particular planting zone. Hope this information helps!
