Hold off on fertilizers until spring growth begins. You can promote a nice green lawn by overseeding the bare areas now and then waiting to fertilize until you've mowed the lawn 2-3 times. This will allow time for the new grass to develop a healthy root system. After you've mowed 2-3 times you can feed and apply a weed killer. Use a product such as Scotts Turfbuilder Plus Halts. It will feed your lawn plus it contains a pre-emergent herbicide which will help keep weed seeds from sprouting. You can feed again in June with Scotts Turfbuilder with Summerguard, and once again in the fall with a winterizer type fertilizer to ensure your lawn remains healthy during the winter months. Hope this answers all your questions. Best wishes with your lawn.
