Winter rye, sometimes called cereal rye, makes an excellent cover crop. You can turn it over in early spring and dig the roots and the tops into the soil. If the tops have gotten quite tall you can mow over it with your lawnmower first and then dig the residue into your soil. Either way, your soil will benefit from the cover crops.
