Why do the tips of my potted spider plants turn brown? The ones outside in the soil don't.

Spider plants are quite sensitive to chemicals in the water, which can cause brown leaf tips but these plants can also develop brown leaf tips if the air is too dry. While you can cut off the leaf tips, wherever you cut will damage the cells within the leaf and the cut area will turn brown (so you may end up cutting them back several times until the leaf ends up being very short. To avoid the browning, use distilled or filtered water and mist your plants occasionally. Hope this helps!
