I believe this is a Japanese Aralia. For the past few years is has been very full with dark green leaves, but the stalks have grown much higher with no leaves on them and we had a very hot summer so it looks like this now. Should I trim the thick stalks down to stimulate growth? If so when should I do so? If that's not the case, how do I revive it? Thank you!!

Fatsia japonica does not tolerate very warm temps or dry soil well at all. You may not have the best environment for this plant. You cannot control the outside temperature, but you can make sure it gets lots of water, especially in hot weather.

Yes, pruning back the stems will trigger new growth just below the pruning cuts. You can do it any time now.
