What is the best time to refresh mulch in my landscaped beds if I only do it once a year? I live in Maryland. I ask this because I often see landscapers applying mulch to beds in September and October and am concerned that much of it gets raked up during leaf clean up. Thanks for your advice! |
You can add mulch about anytime of year. The timing, by itself, doesn't make a big difference. There are several reasons why landscapers apply mulch in the fall. Among them: 1. A fall application provides a little bit of extra winter protection for the plants in the beds. 2. Landscapers typically aren't as pressed for time in Setember/October as they are at other times of the year, and the weather is usually fairly pleasant. 3. Mulch often can be bought much more cheaply in the fall than the spring. |
