This is my second year planting a veggie garden I expanded it this year and put watermelon and pumpkins in it should I stake them as they get taller or should I let the vines grow on the ground until the produce the fruit. |
Melons and squash are perfectly happy sprawling on the ground. They're not too fond of growing up trellises. They will grow up a trellis but when they begin to set fruit you'll need to support that fruit as is matures. Both melons and pumpkins can get quite heavy so you'd need a really strong trellis and you'd need to make a cloth sling to support the developing fruits. I think I'd just allow the vines to sprawl on the ground. Hope you have a great harvest! |
