Direct sowing is the best method for all: Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, etc. Once day temperatures are consistently above 10ºC or 50ºF, you can direct sow or transplant seedlings.

If you have a short growing season and start seedlings indoors, be sure to transplant your seedlings within 6 weeks of germination. This family of vegetables will not produce full size harvest crops if the seedlings are left longer than 6 weeks in pots. Be cautious when buying plants and choose the smallest ones. Many wholesale growers sell big plants in small pots and their potted seedlings are at least 10 weeks old. Light frosts are not harmful to plants.
