For strong stocky seedlings, grow cool. Some plants, like osteosperman, require a vernalization period to produce flower buds.

Most seedlings will benefit with a bright, cool environment after germination. They will be thicker stemmed and healthier. Osteospermum, aka Cape Daisy or African Daisy, produces flower buds with a few weeks of day temperatures around 65ºF or 18ºC and night temperatures around 45ºF or 7ºC. Vernalization is necessary for this plant to form flower buds. If you are buying bedding plants, choose a plant that has a few open blooms and numerous flower buds. It will be unlikely that it will develop additional flower buds.

There are a few exceptions with some of the newer varieties that are more heat tolerant, including Voltage™ Yellow.
