If you would like to grow more plants than you have space for, or if you love vegetables but prefer growing flowers, you might want to look for a good farm stand nearby. It can provide that garden fresh produce you look forward to each summer while you continue to enjoy your flower garden.

I enjoy the fresh vegetables and fruit that summer brings, but I live on a city lot. I love my flowers but the only vegetables I have space to grow are tomatoes. I am happy to be able to get quality produce all summer at a number of local farm stands.

What to grow has always been a point of minor controversy; my wife wanted raspberries while I wanted roses. She wanted several hills of zucchini, which produced so many squash that we couldn't possibly eat them all. We always planted more tomatoes than we needed and ended up sharing them with family, friends and neighbors. Now I plant 3 or 4 tomato plants and use the rest of my space for my favorite flowers. I am able to do this because here we have access to a number of wonderful farm stands.

Some of these are at locally owned nurseries which grow acres of veggies to sell during the season. Others stands are run by some great Hispanic gardeners. There are still some rural areas around my home town where there are farms owned by older people who no longer cultivate their ground. Several I know rent their ground to gardeners who grow wonderful vegetables and sell them at farm stands. Sweet Corn, one of the highlights of summer, requires a lot of ground to produce a crop so I have never grown it. Winter squash is another of my favorites; it, too, takes a lot of growing space, so I'm happy to be able to buy some each fall. Many other choice vegetables and fruits are available as well. Three thumbs-up for farm stands!
