Planting some Hostas in containers can bring wonderful variety to the garden. It also allows plants to be enjoyed on a patio or other shaded area where they can't go directly into the ground. A potted plant can also bring interest to a bed of Hostas. Give it a try.

I have grown Hostas for a number of years and until recently always planted them directly in the ground.

A friend grows them in containers, so I decided to give it a try to bring some variety to my garden. There are several things to consider. First, choose containers that please your taste. Some growers may prefer earth colors while others may pick something brighter. Your choice. I like both. In large pots I avoid ceramics because they are so heavy and sometimes crack during a very cold winter here.

Choose a good, light potting soil and mix in a little slow-release fertilizer. Water according to the needs in your garden. Hostas love water, but they can survive a few days without water. A small hosta in a large container receiving too much water may not survive. Place them in your garden in spots where you can enjoy them. Here are some examples.
