This is a simple and easy-to-build climbing trellis, either permanent or seasonal, for all types of climbing or vining plants.

Below is a drawing showing how to build a simple and easy climbing trellis and showing the materials needed for the project. This makes a very strong and versatile trellis.

You will need four (4) cattle panels that are 50 inches high by 96 inches long and six each (6) six-foot steel tee-posts, all available from Tractor Supply Co. and most farm supply stores. Make two (2) rows, using three (3) of the steel tee-posts per row and spacing the posts 50 inches apart, and separate the two rows with a 36-inch space. Drive the posts at least 12 inches in the ground and secure the panels to the tee-posts 6 inches above the ground so that you can cultivate the area between the posts for the plants.

When you have all four (4) panels secure, you can pull the panel tops together temporarily by using some rope. Then secure the tops with either hog rings, wire ties, or copper wire to form the “arch”.

The 36-inch space between the two rows allows enough room to walk through and pick fruit or maintain the plants. A permanent walkway through the arch can be made using paving stones.

Good luck and happy gardening.
