Is spring automatically a gardener's favorite season? Let's find out in this week's Which Team article!

I know, I know: spring is the obvious choice. But wait- can it really be that cut and dry? Aren't there any gardeners who will show a little favortism to a different season? Let's find out!

Team Spring: This seems like the obvious choice- spring time and gardeners go hand in hand. Everything is waking up, bursting forth from the ground- both annual and perennial. Farmers are sowing their crops in anticipation of this year's harvest. The trees leaf out, and the grass turns green, gardeners practically rush outside to dig their hands into the dirt and visit the local gardening centers and nurseries.

Team Summer: for some of us in the south, summer time is a time of indoor activities. We may plan our fall gardens, cultivate our houseplants, putter around in the early dawn and late dusk hours, and generally stay out of the heat. For my northern friends, summer is the time to do all of their outside activities, after all, the season is so short, you don't want to waste a second of it!

Team Fall: Ahhh- after a long hot summer, fall brings the crisp coolness again. We are planting trees, perennials, shrubs, and bulbs. Gardeners around the country are busy spreading mulch, and putting their gardens to bed for the winter. Time to slow down a bit, and do some propagating, seed harvesting, plant dividing and trading.

Team Winter: What? Gardeners don't like to talk much about winter, it seems. Consider this: winter is the time to completely rest and rejuvenate for the comming year. The time to curl up with our plant catalogs that begin arriving just after the new year. Dreaming about our new beds, circling plants, seeds, and design ideas. Of course, I can't forget winter sowing!

For the first time, I am not claiming any one team. I truly love each season and the different variety that it brings to life. I love the business of spring, the reprieve  of summer, the briskness of fall, and the lazy of winter. However, I do admit to being a little fickle. Right around the middle of each season, I'm ready for the next one!

https://garden.org/i/t/dave.png I love the warm summer nights, when it gets down to 75 degrees at 10pm. The fall brings such a relief from the heat, and I love the smell in the air as the leaves begin to turn. I love the cool winter afternoons where I can get those important farm chores done, like building fences. I also love the frosty feeling in my nose when going out to milk the cow on an early January morning. But nothing... NOTHING... beats the first daffodils, redbuds and other early flowers of Springtime. Greening pastures, new calves, hostas poking up, everything coming back to life. Promises of new adventures in gardening and life. Yes, Team Spring here!

What about you? Is it Team Spring all the way, or does another season tickle your fancy better?
