Need more room to overwinter your hanging plants in your greenhouse(s), as I do? This easy-to-build rack will help.

When I started putting my plants away for the winter, I realized that even though I have two 10x13 greenhouses I was running out of room and couldn't take out either my seed starting tables or the tables all my orchids are on, so I came up with this. I'm using it, but it's not actually completed yet. I still need to paint all of the parts, shorten each cross piece by about an inch, and screw each of the pieces together with wood screws. I opted to go the wood-screw route instead of glue as it would be much easier to break down if I needed to make any changes in the future. It's made of 1 1/2" PVC all around. The parts I used are:

1 1/2" PVC pipe - I got these in 5' lengths; # needed depends on how large you want it. I used a total of 8 pieces with little pieces left over
1 1/2" Tee - 6
1 1/2" 90degree cross Tee - 1
1 1/2" dia Cap - 6
1 1/2" 90degree vent elbow fitting - 2
5/8" dia threaded eyebolts. I used 8 this time and have room for 4 more on the top row. Just make sure that 1) the threaded length of the eyebolt is long enough to go through the pipe, and 2) that your plant hangers will fit inside the eye portion.

If you're going to paint yours. as I am, there is only one paint that should be used, and that's Krylon Fusion paint for plastics. Also, it's a good idea to remove all the markings on the PVC pipe as they'll probably bleed through. I got a lot of information about cleaning, painting, and assembling at this site - http://www.thepaintstore.com/K... Right now mine is assembled by the "Push-and-Pray" method.

The "feet" -- since this is not really completed yet, I'm looking to make it more stable with three instead of two "feet."

The completed project. Notice I need to take care of the slight bow on the left side and top center. I'll work that out this spring when I make it a more permanent rack.
