One of the best things about aquarium decorations is that they are designed to keep their coloring even after being in an aquarium for years. This means they will keep their coloring outside in the rain for a long time as well.
I prefer the tree trunk or tree root style of decorations for this project. Some already have the holes in them for the plants. If not, you can drill the holes as needed. Always check to see how well they can be drilled by testing on the bottom. Most of these decorations are hollow; therefore, it is easy to fill them with potting mix. If you have a bonsai pot, or other container, you can even simulate some sort of "bonsai" with minimal effort. Let your imagination run wild!
Sempervivums and Sedums are plants that are well suited for this project. They come in many colors and variations to give you many options for use in your project.
