New in 2022

Received this plant from Joyce in June. Attractive leaves. It prefers to have water, especially when transplanting, but handled it well and did well in the heat in Michigan summer. Pretty flowers in September when not much else is blooming. So far does not seem aggressive.

Is toxic to humans if ingested, especially if cows ingest it and then humans drink the milk or eat the meat. (Story of Lincoln's mother.)
September 26, 2022: Bloomed (Lovely white blooms)
October 1, 2022: Transplanted (Received plant from a friend (Joyce). Transplanted and needed plenty of water to help it settle in. Once it was watered well, it handled the heat just fine. So far is growing well in the border. Does not seem aggressive. Attractive flowers when not much else is blooming.)

New to Garden . org and new to me in 2022. Descriptions of this onion cultivar describe it as a cross between a bunching onion and a bulb onion. It produces the shape of a bunching onion with a strong root system, larger top, and the mildness of a bulb onion. Guardsman is recommended by Johnny's Selected Seeds and MIGardener as a scallion for overwintering in the north. MIGardener says it will be the earliest bunching onion in the garden—mild flavor with long tops. Perfect cooked into recipes or sliced as a thin garnish.

Seed obtained from Seed Swap. Central USA native. Lead plant is a small, branching, shrubby perennial. It is densely hairy and can become woody with age, but some winters it dies back to the ground. Size Height: to 3 feet. Photo and description: Missouri Dept of Conservation.

Flowers are tiny, massed in tight, elongated spikes; stamens with reddish filaments and yellow anthers protrude from lavender or purple flowers. The corolla is reduced to a single, top petal (the "sail"), lacking the other petals (the "wings" and "keel") common in pea-family flowers. Blooms May–August.

Leaves are alternate, feather-compound, to 4 inches long, with up to 5 rounded, short, gray-hairy leaflets each to about ¾ inch long and ½ inch wide.

Bought 100 of these at Costco and am putting them in water with a bubbler to increase in size before planting. February 27, 2024: Obtained plant (Purchased at Costco, 100 corms on Tuesday. On Thursday, soaking overnight with a bubbler to plant the next day in pots and grow on for spring.)
