Has been growing in some shaded areas of our backyard for some time. Self-seeding. Now that we've lost two significant, large shade trees, I will keep an eye out of where it is self-seeding and growing with the installation of three replacement, but smaller trees.

Bulbous Iris. Labeled reticulata but not sure.

New to me in 2022. Prairie Moon Nursery seed was refrigerated and is now winter sown. Germinated well in 2022. Has blue-pink flowers like its cousin, lungwort, pulmonaria, but earlier -- appears in early spring. Native to the eastern U.S. as a lovely woodland ephemeral.

Prefer a rich well-drained soil and loves leaf mulch. Also related to the borage family without the bristly hairs, has smooth foliage. The clumps form slowly and return year after year. They go completely dormant in summer and will emerge the following spring. They are best paired with ferns and other perennials.

January 29, 2022: Seeds sown (Winter Sown in 2 jugs and 6 red cups)
March 28, 2022: Seeds germinated (Germinated. Moved some into the new greenhouse to grow further. Note: Added this plant to the Spring Ephemerals list.)
May 11, 2022 - May 17, 2022: Transplanted (Transplanting from winter sown seed. They seem to be doing well!)
May 16, 2022: Transplanted (Transplanted the rest of the Virginia Bluebells. The ones in red solo cups did the best. Two winter sown jugs had mixed results. One jug did well (6 seedlings), one had only ONE seedling it it.)
April 25, 2023: Plant emerged (Will add photos. With leaf mulch, and being planted by a hydrangea and in a semi-shaded area, it seems pretty happy.)

One of my absolute favorite very early signs of spring. I LOVE seeing bloodroot bloom in early spring ahead of the green leaves fully leafing out. It is slowly spreading in my yard.
In 2021, fall, I transplanted several bloodroot pieces.
April 21, 2022: Bloomed (New bloodroot transplanted pieces blossomed in new locations.)

Cottage Garden
Ordered 100 future plants (bulbs) today in an early winter special from Van Engelen

This white flowering rodent-resistant white form of the Siberian Squill bears multiple flowers on strong stems. It also naturalizes readily in areas of light shade or dappled sunlight. It is a heritage cultivar from 1880.

Use nine bulbs per square foot or scatter-plant for a more natural look.

Bulb size: 8 cm/up. Full to partial sunlight. Bloom time in zone 5: March/April.

Plant 5" deep and 4" to 6" apart. Height: 4" to 5".

Scilla are also good for forcing: pot them up in mid-October, pre-cool at a consistent, dark 38° to 45°F for six to eight weeks with moderate watering. Bring into the house ~ they will bloom two to four weeks later.

Got this as part of a package with Banja Luka tulips at Costco to balance out the later bloomers with these midspring blooms. Great price for 50 tulips. This is a newer cultivar. 'Red Impressions' is a Division 4 (Darwin Hybrid) tulip that evidently is in the 'longest term perennial' tulip group.
