Silvermound Artemisia (Artemisia schmidtiana 'Silver Mound') |
Prev Dead Zone |
Z5: I had a really gorgeous one where the grass circle is now. I planted a new one on the garage side, in front of the roses in 2017. I hope it becomes as nice as the old one. 2019: It's gone. The gophers were really busy over where it was. |

Dusty Miller (Artemisia stelleriana 'Boughton Silver') |
Have Greenhouse |
I've always thought of this as an annual for some reason. The ones in the greenhouse garden came back this year.
Variegated Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris Oriental Limelight) |
Have Crabapple |
Too tall and a thug to boot
Goat's Beard (Aruncus dioicus 'Zweiweltenkind') |
Have Front |
Front. One of my favorites. The male flowers are a little showier, but the female seeds are nice later.
European Wild Ginger (Asarum europaeum) |
Have Front |
Not sure if this is still here.
Showy Milkweed (Asclepias speciosa) |
Have Front Bank Here & There Native |
2017 & 2018 We have tons of this this summer and lots of butterflies as well!
Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) |
Have Corner Dead Zone |
Corner - This just showed up in '18, I didn't plant it. In front of the white lilac. 2019 - Seems to be gone from Z5. |
||
Blue Woodruff (Asperula orientalis 'Blue Surprise') |
Prev Tender/Annuals |
FS-PS, moist soil, 6-12", summer. Likes rich soil. These are a nice airy filler that do best in dappled to part shade. Attracts bees and butterflies. Fragrant. Will self-seed. I've planted these a few times with varying results. One year they really filled in an area under the crabapple tree. I had a whole flat of starts from seed. Other years, I might get 5 or 6 to come up. |

Frikart's Aster (Aster x frikartii) |
Have Front Bank |

Astilbes (Astilbe) |
Have Front |
|||
Astilbe 'Straussenfeder' |
Have Front |
|||
Chinese Astilbe (Astilbe rubra 'Maggie Daley') |
Have Aspen |
2020: Aspen. I must have ordered this from Gilbert Wild by mistake - I had no need for an astilbe. Oh well, I stuck it under the trees down in the hole.
Astilbe (Astilbe rubra 'Superba') |
Have Front |
This astilbe hasn't been very impressive. It has wimpy flowers with meh color. I don't actually have any astilbes that rock my boat. Maybe the alkaline soil?
Basket-of-Gold (Aurinia saxatilis Summitâ„¢) |
Have Aspen |
2020: Planted on the bank near the spirea.
Bamboo (Bambusa) |
Have Here & There |
From Lake Powell. Might be able to narrow it down once it gets up a ways. 2018 - Both survived the winter!
Tuberous Begonia (Begonia x tuberhybrida 'Pendula Pink') |
Have Tender and Annuals this year |
Planted in a hanging pot. It's still in the greenhouse - no sign of life yet.
Japanese Barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Rose Glow') |
Have Front Bank |
|||
Pigsqueak (Bergenia crassifolia) |
Have Aspen |
Little bitty thing on the slope from long ago. Should probably move it to somewhere with more sun - the shrubs are shading it and it gets no water.
Pigsqueak (Bergenia crassifolia 'Vinterglod') |
Have Corner |
|||
Beet (Beta vulgaris 'Detroit') |
Will Vegetables |
63 days. Heirloom Reliable old standby that we've had good results with, has good greens. 2018: Did pretty well 2011: We got a few 2010: Decent harvest |
