lauribob's Plant List

A note from lauribob
I am not interested in selling or trading live plants. I do save seeds once in awhile and would be willing to trade those.

Caladiums (Caladium)

Tender/Annuals
Dappled to full shade, well drained, moist soil, rich in organic content. I get these most years. When they take off, they are gorgeous. I have mixed results however, for some reason. At the very least, find a new source. I don't do well overwintering them.
2021: Big bag of mixed from Van B. I didn't put any in a pot this year and instead planted them all along the front of the Front garden. So far, zero have come up. I think I might be done with caladiums - too finicky for me. I'd do better off to start more coleus from seed and put them out, I think. Update: A few came up here and there, but never got any size to them. I think I would have to prepare a special bed for them with amended soil and yada yada.
2019: Hardly any of these came up. A bag of mixed from Van B.
2018: Only a few came up from the mixed bag from Van B. I did manage to overwinter 1 bulb successfully.

PS-FS, moist well-drained soil, 1-2'. Best in bright indirect sunlight, but not direct sunlight that will scorch and damage the leaves. Likes fertile, rich, slightly acid soil. Feed monthly with 5-10-10.

Part/dappled shade, wet, 2-3'. I'm not sure if these really want to grow in water or not. 'Suitable for bog gardening.' They are expensive. I think it is a marginal plant.
2014: Barely thrived for one season. Not impressed.

Grasses
2 in the KK garden, 1 in the WM.
2022: The one on the grinder side in the KK is slowly coming back, so the gophers must not have gotten all the roots. The one on the other side is still a no-show. The one in the WM garden is there, if somewhat diminished. It was never very robust.
2019: The gophers have decimated both grasses in the KK garden. When I went to cut them back in the early spring, the whole thing came off in my hands - no roots. So sad.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis 'Bronzed Beauty')

Tender/Annuals
FS-PS, average water, 8", summer.
Flowers 50-60 days from seed. Reseeds readily. Doesn't like too much heat. If they start to flag in the heat, you can cut them back for a late rebloom. Will tolerate a light frost. Flowers are edible.
2022: I got some going from seed in a pot. The foliage gets pretty droopy in the heat. I think I'll plant them in the ground next time.

Tender/Annuals
FS-PS, average water, 16", spring-fall. Tolerates poor soil, Prefers full sun.
I've planted this a few times and it is a really nice variety - a much softer orange, with shades of pink.

China Aster (Callistephus chinensis 'Hulk')

Tender/Annuals
FS-PS, drought tolerant, 20-24", summer. Likes rich, moist soil. Green bracts that surround the flower appear to be green petals. Easily started from seed. They make great, long lasting cut flowers since the bracts don't fade away nearly as fast as a real petal would. Deer resistant, supposed to be self-seeding. Likes it cool (part shade) to bloom profusely. Not at all frost tolerant.
2021: From seed, 3 healthy plants. In the Z5 behind the betony. They took a bit of a hit when the sprinkler quit working there and we didn't notice right away.

These were really nice the one year I had them. They are very hard to find as plants and I didn't have much luck starting from seed.
