ordered Brent&Becky 2024. I may plant in the grassy area on south west corner of house
Stem upright but often bent by wind or growing through shrubs. Roots spreading, producing new corms. Leaves 3–5, with shiny blue wax, throughout length of back side, withered by flowering.
Cultivation is not difficult but the plants must be given a dry summer dormancy. Fertilize when in growth and flower development and keep moist, but not wet, while in growth in winter and spring. Plant in the ground or in a deep enough pot that will have good room for roots. In coastal northern California this species seems to bloom better in full sun.
Blooms for extended length of time for a bulb. Leaves form a rosette; blooms on stalk that may wind thru other plants. Let it go completely dry in summer. Competes well with weeds. Increases over time.

There are many species of epilobium. I found a website that said Epilobium leptophyllum (narrow leafed willowherb) drew Japanese beetles away from roses! So I assume the species that draw hummingbirds probably would be attacked by Japanese beetle as well. Other Epilobium species are known as fireweed.

self sows. May take 2 years to germinate. Moist shady area. Native woodland plant that blooms late in season. Hummers really like the blooms. Maybe plant with joepye weed. Should be resistant to Japanese beetle.
Got seed from Prairie Moon in Feb 2024. Began moist/cold stratification at end of Feb. Needs 2+ months, then 2+ months moist/warm, then another 2+ months moist/cold. Needs sunlight to germinate.
I will extend the first cold period to July or August.
Late April: some seed planted in peat pot room temp, some transferred in moist bag in room temp, some left in fridge.
